During high school, I dreamt of being a famous emcee but I ended up going to community college as an early childhood development major thereafter. I discovered my inner producer at 20 and didn't go back to school for close to 8 years after that. I spun my wheels working retail management jobs and finally, I decided that I wanted to be a successful lawyer of some sort. I knew I needed a stable career to support this endeavor so I tried out the dental assisting program at Career Care Institute. I excelled so much that I considered leaving for dental school but music was still my passion. After wrapping up the dental assisting program, I applied to a few universities that spring and got accepted to a few of them; I ultimately chose Full Sail. Now, it was finally my time to get an education in the things that I'm most passionate about.
Not
following my dreams and investing time and money into other ventures was not
effective decision making on my part. This week's video with Donna Dowless was
special to me because there is so much great stuff to be taken away from her
interview with course director Ron Cook. The type of advice that she gives her
audience is the same kind of advice I try and give driven individuals on my
journey. I tried it again by giving
education one last shot and it worked because the payout was well worth the
risk. If I would have slowed down and
asked questions (particularly in high school) I would have realized in the
first place that there were institutions like Full Sail devoted to the advancement
of multimedia and the entertainment industry. Had I asked, listened & got
help from my school counselors, I could have been influenced to make a move
out of my comfort zone to produce results. Letting
the ego go is something that I am
convinced gets better with time and practice. It seems like a human reflex to want
to conquer all 7 seas on our own in one day and be so absorbed with the thought
process that we're the only ones that know what's best for us. With wisdom
comes the great realization that sometimes we have to delegate the load to
others for great things to happen in our lives.
